This was the Saturday of what would be a Jekyll & Hyde Memorial Day weekend. Today was scorching hot, with a high of 92°, but a drastic change would occur on Sunday when a strong cold front moved through. This set up a Memorial Day that felt more like late October.

After a refreshing morning low of 56° the temperature rocketed to 91° under sunny skies - the year's first reading in the 90s. (Today also happened to be the funeral of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, which was held in Manhattan.) Additionally, this was the tenth day this year with a diurnal temperature variation of 30 degrees or more, the greatest number of such days of any year (through 2025; breaking a tie with 1939).

Scattered showers that fell throughout the day amounted to 0.30", the first rain on this date in 10 years.
2013 (Thursday)
Strong thunderstorms from 4-8 PM dumped 1.81" of rain. This brought the month's rainfall to just over seven inches, making it the wettest May since 1990. It was also New York's wettest month since September 2011.
2020 (Saturday)
Much of today's 0.65" rainfall, on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, poured down between 11 AM and noon. Up until today, less than an inch of rain had fallen this month (0.95"). The amount that fell today was 0.03" shy of the greatest amount to fall on the Saturday of the three-day Memorial Day weekend, in 1982.
2025 (Friday)
ReplyDelete0.26" inches of rain was measured today, making this the wettest mont of the year. Temperatures improved, but were still chillier than average (high/low of 63°/47°). The low was the chilliest for the month and was the fourth consecutive reading in the 40s.
this was the first time 1955's year to date precipitation total reached or exceeded 10 inches, the latest date on record for this occurrence (a record which still stands). since 2000, the latest date for this occurrence is May 3, which was the first time 2012's year to date precipitation total reached or exceeded 10 inches (also a distinction which still holds true today).
