Today in New York City Weather History: March 10

1873 (Monday)

The 0.3" of snow that fell today was the last measurable snow of what was New York's snowiest winter for the next 50 years, with 60.3" measured.  (The winter of 1923 would top it by 0.1").  It's now ranked fifth.

1877 (Saturday)

The day after the mildest reading of the month (57°), the temperature at daybreak was 21°.  This was the first of eleven days in a row in which there were no highs milder than 40°; four days in a row would see lows in the teens (coldest reading was 10° on 3/19).  The average high/low during this Arctic outbreak was 32°/22° (fifteen degrees colder than average).  And there would be two snowfalls that amounted to five inches.

1893 (Friday)

Today and yesterday were the first time since Dec. 16-17 to have back-to-back days with lows above 32°.

1923 (Saturday)

Although the snow that fell was of the wet, "junk" variety (today's high/low was 41°/32°), the 0.7" that accumulated brought the winter's total to 60.3", tying it with the winter of 1873 as snowiest on record.  (Nine days later it would claim the title of snowiest when 0.1" fell; it would hold this title until the winter of 1948.)

1957 (Sunday)

For the fourth day in a row the high was 39° (eight degrees below average); however, every day had a different low temperature.  Today was the only day of the four that had sunny skies.

1983 (Thursday)

On a rainy day (mid-morning thru mid-afternoon), just two degrees separated the high (42°) and low (40°), something that occurs just once every two or three years.

1987 (Tuesday)

Befitting March's reputation for changeable weather, this morning's low of 15° came less than 48 hours after a high of 76°.  These were also the month's temperatures extremes.

1997 (Monday)

The half-inch of snow that fell today was the most significant accumulation on this date in the years since 1959 (when 0.6" fell).  However, it was quickly washed away by rain as the temperature rose into the low 50s.

2000 (Friday)

This was the nineteenth day in a row with above-average readings.  During these days, the average high/low was 55°/39°, nearly 10 degrees above average.  Not only was it a mild period, but dry as well, as just 0.29" of rain fell.

2006 (Friday)

Today's high of 74° was a record for the date, a jump of twenty-seven degrees from the morning low.  It would also be the mildest reading of the month.

2016 (Thursday)

For the second day in a row the area basked in record-breaking warmth, with today's high two degrees warmer than yesterday's (although today had more clouds than yesterday).  Today's high/low of 79°/63° was 31 degrees above average and was comparable to temperatures in mid-June.

2017 (Friday)

For the first time since 1934 more than an inch of snow fell on this date, as 2.1" accumulated between 8 AM and noon.  This was a day after the temperature reached 61° in the late afternoon, similar to what happened on Feb. 9, when 9.4" of snow fell the day after the high was 62°.

2026 (Tuesday)

Today Central Park experienced its earliest high temperature of 80° or warmer. (The previous earliest date was March 13 in 1990 when the high reached 85°.) This came 15 days after a blizzard buried the City under nearly 20 inches of snow.

Today's high of 80° came one day after the year's first reading in the 70s (73°) and two days after the first reading in the 60s (69°).  Only once before, in 1892, had this sequence of temperatures occurred (April 2-4).  Today was the third date in a row in which the mean temperature was more than 20 degrees warmer than average, something which last occurred in April 2023
