Today in New York City Weather History: March 11

1920 (Thursday)

Today was the first day since Jan. 15 to have less than an inch of snow on the ground in Central Park.  During this nearly eight weeks of snow cover, nearly 36 inches of snow fell (close to half of it fell from Feb. 4-6).

1960 (Friday)

This morning's low of 14° was the second coldest reading of the winter, and a record for the date (coldest reading was 9° on 12/23).

1979 (Sunday)

A rainy morning (0.75" fell) preceded passage of a cold front that dropped the temperature from 49° in the early AM to 25° by midnight - the coldest reading in nearly three weeks.

1980 (Tuesday)

Beginning last night at around 9 PM and continuing until a little past 1:00 this morning, an inch of rain fell.  Nearly half of the precipitation, 0.44", fell between midnight and 1 AM.  This was the first of six rainstorms in March that produced 0.75" or more of rain.  All told, the month's precipitation would total 10.42", making it the rainiest March on record (a record eclipsed in 2010 when 10.68" was measured).

1996 (Monday)

Today was the seventeenth day in a row (since 2/24) in which no low temperature was duplicated, ranging from 11° to 47°.

1998 (Wednesday)

Today was the first day since New Year's Day with a high of 32° or colder, a span of ten weeks.  And tomorrow would be the third, and last, such day of the winter.  A typical winter has eighteen such days.

2014 (Tuesday)

It was a beautiful early spring day as the temperature soared to 66° under sunny skies.  This was the first 60-degree reading of the year, the latest date for this occurrence since 2003 (when it happened on March 16).  Average date for the first 60 is Feb. 3 (since 1980).

2015 (Wednesday)

We missed by one degree duplicating last year's first 60-degree temperature of the year.  Still, today's high was the mildest since Christmas Day's balmy 62°.

2016 (Friday)

Although today's afternoon temperature in the mid-60s was well above the average high of 48°, it felt like a brisk October day after the previous two days had highs in the upper 70s (both records).

2017 (Saturday)

One week after winter-like cold (high/low of 30°/19°), today was a bit colder, with a high/low of 29°/17° (18 degrees below average).  This was the third day this month with a low in the teens, which was more than December, January or February had (each had two such days).

2024 (Monday)

It was a sunny day with howling winds that gusted between 50-60 mph and very low humidity that bottomed out at 15% late in the afternoon (the lowest reported in Central Park since last April).  The winds were generated by a deepening coastal storm near Canada's Maritime Provinces (the same low responsible for dumping 1.56" of rain on NYC mostly on Saturday)
