Today in New York City Weather History: July 18

Since 1970, a typical day in July has experienced temperatures in the nineties/triple digits a dozen times.  The date on which it's happened most frequently is July 18 - in 23 of the years (thru 2025); but no 90+ readings have occurred since 2019.  The next likeliest date is July 19, (in 21 years).  Interestingly, for 20 consecutive years (1923-1942) 7/18 had no highs this hot.

1953 (Saturday)

This was the second day in a row with a high in the triple digits, the first time with consecutive 100°+ readings since late August 1948, when there were three days in row.  Today's high/low was 101°/78°, yesterday's was 100°/76°.

1960 (Monday)

High temperatures over the past four days: 85° (today)-84°-83°-82° (7/15).  And tomorrow's high/low would be the same as today's (85°/69°).

1979 (Wednesday)

An inch of rain fell, making this the rainiest day during two dry months in which only 3.32" fell.  0.69" of today's rain came down between 1-3 AM.  This was the first time rain fell on this date in ten years.

1982 (Sunday)

Today would be the hottest day of the summer, with a high/low of 98°/78°.  (To cool off on this torrid day I took a trip with friends to the beach in Riis Park, Brooklyn.)

1983 (Monday)

This was the fourth year in a row in which the high was in the nineties on this date.  Today's high reached 97°.

1988 (Monday)

For the third year in a row on this date (and in seven of the past nine years) the high rose into the 90s.

1991 (Thursday)

The high today was a blistering 99°.  This was the fourth high of 95°+ in the pasts three weeks, and there would be four more in the next week.

1993 (Sunday)

High temperatures were in the 90s or 100s for thirteen of the past fifteen days.

1994 (Monday)

0.60" of rain fell during the 30-minute period between 10:55-11:25 AM.  Today was also the only day of the month in which the temperature failed to reach the 80s or higher (on average, six days in July have highs below 80°).  The last time this happened in July was in 1983 (and it would happen again in 2011).

1998 (Saturday)

For the fifth day in a row the day's high was 85°.

2000 (Tuesday)

Although today was just one degree above average (high/low of 87°/69°) it would be the only day with an above average reading in the twenty-two days between July 11 and Aug 1.

2006 (Tuesday)

A hot and humid afternoon (high of 95°) was followed by a severe thunderstorm between 10-11 PM that dumped 0.69" of rain.  These storms maintained their strength as they moved eastward and lashed Fire Island, where high winds snapped the flagpole in the harbor of Fire Island Pines.  Deck furniture, table umbrellas and even a few grills were blown into swimming pools.

2007 (Wednesday)

1.44" of rain fell during morning rush hour (7-10 AM), with half of it falling in just fifteen minutes (7:03-7:18 AM).  The day's total rainfall of 1.59" was a record for the date (which would be broken five years later).

2011 (Monday)

Today's high was 95°, the seventeenth time since 1980 the high on this date rose into the 90s (more than half of the years).

2012 (Wednesday)

Today's high soared to 100° (with the heat index close to 110°), making this the third summer in a row with a triple-digit reading - just the second time a three-year streak has occurred (the other time was 1953-55). This is the last time the temperature reached triple digits in Central Park (thru June 2025).

The vicious heat was broken by severe thunderstorms between 4-6 PM, which delivered torrential downpours and hail (1.76" of rain was measured, a record for the date, breaking the record set five years earlier).

2013 (Thursday)

Today's high was 98°, which would be the hottest high temperature of the year.  (And the hottest reading until the summer of 2025, when a high of 99° occurred on 6/24.)  It was also the fifth day in a row in the nineties, and the fourth year in a row in which the temperature rose into the nineties on this date.

2022 (Monday)

1.85” of rain fell, a record amount for the date.  Much of it poured down in two 45-minute periods - at daybreak (0.84” fell between 6:00-6:45) and during the afternoon (0.73” between 2:00-2:45).  Rainfall amounts over three inches were reported in north Jersey and the Hudson Valley.

The air had a tropical feel to it all day, with the dew point reaching 76° in the early afternoon and early evening; for 13 consecutive hours (9 AM-10 PM) it was 74° or higher.  This was the highest dew point all year (last year’s highest was 77° on 8/27).

Despite the clouds and high humidity, the temperature managed to rise to 81°, making this the 20th day in a row with a high of 80° or warmer.  However, today’s high was the coolest of the 20 days.  (FYI, 20 days is the average length of a summer’s longest streak of 80+ days.)
