Today in New York City Weather History: July 1

1902 (Tuesday)

This was the last day of a streak of fifteen days in which every day had a high below 80°.  Ranging between 68° and 77°, the average high during this period was 73° (compared to the seasonal average of 79°).

1933 (Saturday)

A severe thunderstorm from 8:30-10:30 PM dumped 2.17" of rain.  During the storm the temperature dropped from 88° to 72°.  Earlier in the day the high had reached 94°.

1943 (Thursday)

After experiencing the warmest June on record (which still stands), July began with a record low of 52°

1964 (Wednesday)

For the second day in a row the high topped out at 99°.  The morning low of 77°, however, was eight degrees warmer than yesterday's.

1968 (Monday)

Today's high/low of 97°/77° was quite a contrast from the high/low of 61°/57° four days earlier (and 68°/58° three days earlier).

1971 (Thursday)

After a steamy high of 94°, two rounds of thunderstorms rolled through between 3-9 PM, dumping 1.56".

1974 (Monday)

This was the ninth day in a row with some rain, but total rainfall during these days amounted to just 1.42" (half of it fell on the first day of the streak, June 23).  Temperatures were unseasonably cool during these days, with an average high/low of 73°/59°, eight degrees below average.

1981 (Wednesday)

0.73" of rain poured down between 3-4 PM.

1983 (Friday)

Today was the 24th day in a row with highs in the 80s - very early for a streak of this duration.

1988 (Friday)

In the midst of a hot summer (and one of the hottest Julys on record), today's morning low of 53° was the second coolest temperature ever reported in July (52° on July 1, 1943 is the coolest).

1993 (Thursday)

Very similar to 1983, today was the twenty-third day in a row with a high temperature in the 80s.

1999 (Thursday)

The 0.24" of rain that fell today would be the most to fall this month.  It accounted for more than half of the month's paltry total of 0.44" - the least rainfall on record for the month of July.

 2012 (Sunday)

Today's high was 94°, making this the first time since 1971 that the temperature rose into the 90s on July 1.

2013 (Monday)

Rain fell between 8:30 AM and 2 PM, but much of it came at the end of the AM rush hour, when 0.52" poured down between 9:00 and 9:30.  Cloud cover made this the only day between June 20 and July 11 not to see a high in the 80s or 90s (it was 77°).

2018 (Sunday)

Today's high/low of 96°/79° made this the hottest day since Aug. 13, 2016, when it was 96°/81°.  It was also a humid day, which resulted in a heat index of 103° at around 2 PM.  The day's low of 79°, a record for the date, was the first low of 75°+ on this date since 1968 (when it was 77°).

2020 (Wednesday)

This morning's low of 67° would be the coolest reading of July, a new record for mildest "coolest" reading in any month (breaking the previous record of 66° in July 2008).  It would also be the only day this month with a low that was below average (and it was just one degree cooler than average).
