Today in New York City Weather History: June 30

1915 (Wednesday)

1.93" of rain poured down late tonight, which was 0.01" more than what fell during the first 29 days of the month.  1.27" of tonight's rain fell between 11PM-midnight.  (In reality, this torrential rain fell between midnight-1 AM on 7/1, but since the National Weather Service uses Standard Time year-round for its official records, the rain is credited to 6/30.)

1920 (Wednesday)

The day's low temperature of 68° was the mildest of the month.  July would also have no lows of 70+, the second and last July to have that distinction (the first was in 1888).  1920's first low in the 70s wouldn't be until 8/9.

1925 (Tuesday)

Today was the eighth day this month with a high of 76°, which was the month's coolest high temperature.  This is the mildest reading on record to be June's coolest high temperature (through 2025).  Typically, the coolest high in June is around 63°.

1959 (Tuesday)

Although yesterday's high of 97° made it the hottest reading of the summer, today, with a high/low of 93°/79°, had the year's highest mean temperature.  (Yesterday's low was 69°.)

1964 (Tuesday)

Today was the first of back-to-back days with high of 99°, a record for the date (which still stands).

1966 (Thursday)

Today's high of 94° was the tenth day with a high of 90+ this month, the second most ever reported in June (the most was in 1943 - eleven).

1972 (Friday)

This was the eleventh day in the past fifteen to have rain.  Today's measured 0.71", making it the seventh day during this period to receive more than 0.65".  All told, 8.36" fell in the second half of June.

1974 (Sunday)

Thunderstorms between 9 PM-1 AM produced 0.26" of rain, making this the ninth day of the past ten to see rain.  However, the amount of rain to fall during this period wasn't excessive, as just 1.80" was measured.  It was also a chilly ten days, with temperatures seven degrees below average.

1984 (Saturday)

3.07" of rain fell today, a record for the date.  During the half hour between 9-9:30 AM, 0.68" fell, while 1.36" fell in the hour between 9:15-10:15 AM.

1989 (Friday)

The coolest low temperature of the month was 58°, and it was reached this morning, and on five other days this month.  This was the mildest coolest low of any June (joining five others) until June 2024, whose chilliest reading was 59°.

1990 (Saturday)

During a nighttime thunderstorm, 0.27" fell in just five minutes, and 0.69" in fifteen minutes (9:54-10:09 PM).

1991 (Sunday)

This was the fourth day in a row with a high in the 90s.  During these days the highs were: 91°-96°-97°-90°. This was also the 15th day this year with a high in the 90s - the earliest date for this many (through 2025).

1994 (Thursday)

Today was just the third day this month with below-average temperatures, a month that was the warmest June since 1966.

1996 (Saturday)

Rain that fell for much of the day (0.88" was measured) kept the temperature from going no higher than 67°, sixteen degrees cooler than average.

2009 (Tuesday)

Today's high of 84° was the warmest reading of a cool June - the coolest since 1958.  Only June 1903 had a cooler reading as its warmest temperature (81°).  The 0.66" of rain that fell today brought the month's total over ten inches.  It missed passing June 2003 as the wettest by 0.20".  Rain fell on eighteen days.

2012 (Saturday)

Although five of the last ten days had highs in the 90s, June was slightly cooler than average - the first below average month since March of last year.  Still, this was the most 90-degree days in June since 1999, which had six.

2014 (Monday)

This was New York's thirty-first June (since 1869), with no days with highs in the 90s, yet it managed to be 1.0 degree warmer than average.  Of all of the "no-90" Junes, this was the warmest of them all.  This was also the first year since 1985 to have no 90-degree temperatures in the first half of the year.

2015 (Tuesday)

Today was the sixteenth day this month with a high of 80°+, which is close to average.  What made it noteworthy is the fact that this number was two fewer than the number of 80-degree days in May, the first time this happened since 1985, and just the second time in the years since 1950.  Additionally, June's average high of 79.5° was just 0.1 degree above that of May.  (But its average low was 5.3 degrees warmer.)

2021 (Wednesday)

It was scorching-hot day, with a high of 98°, the hottest reading in Central Park since the summer of 2013, and the hottest high temperature in June since 1994 (also 98°).  This was the fourth day in a row with a high in the 90s (the other days had highs of 90°, 92°, and 95°), joining another four-day heat wave earlier in the month.  This was just the second June with two heat waves of four days or more (the other was in 1943, which is the hottest June on record).

Thundershowers moved through after 8:30, cooling the temperature to 73° (the morning low had been a sultry 80°).  The rain kept this from being the second June in a row with less than two inches of rain, and the amount that fell (0.65", much of it between 10-11 PM) was the greatest daily amount of the month.
