Today was a delightful Mother's Day as it was mostly sunny and quite warm, with a high of 89°.
2001 (Saturday)
After the first twelve days of May were twelve degrees warmer than average (high/low of 80°/58°), with no rain, the rest of the month would experience temperatures four degrees below average and receive two inches of rain (still a below average amount).
2004 (Wednesday)
1.45" of rain fell, with most of it falling between 2-8 PM. The air had a tropical feel to it, with a sultry high/low of 86°/65°.
2006 (Friday)
1.53" of rain fell between 1-7 AM. It came down especially hard between 2:00-4:00, when 0.95" poured down.
2008 (Monday)
A showery Monday morning (0.33") was followed by a raw & chilly afternoon. This was the sixth year of the past seven in which rain fell on this date. Today's high/low of 54°/45° was eleven degrees chillier than average.
2010 (Wednesday)
Today's high temperature was just 48°, twenty-two degrees colder than average. The temperature was kept down due to overcast skies and showers. This was the chilliest high temperature since March 27.
2011 (Thursday)
This was the last of a seven-day stretch of splendid springtime weather, conditions that made it a delight to stroll along the streets of Manhattan. Under sunny skies, temperatures each day were in the low-to-mid-70s, a few degrees above average.
2014 (Monday)
A warm and sultry day. With a high/low of 85°/64° (14 degrees above average), this was the warmest day since last year, on Oct. 4, when it was 86°/66°. This was also the third day in a row with temperatures rising into the 80s, the first time since mid-September for a streak this long.
2015 (Tuesday)
Today, with a high of 86°, was the eighth day this month with a high in the 80s. These eight days were the most on record to occur in the first 12 days of May. Between May 2 and today the average high was 80°, nearly twelve degrees above average, and more typical of mid-June.
In addition to these warm temperatures, it was also very dry. Today was the 20th day in a row in which no measurable rain was reported, the longest such streak since one of 21 days in the spring of 2001.
2019 (Sunday)
A nor'easter brought a cold, all-day rain on Mother's Day. Temperatures fell throughout the day, from the upper 50s just after midnight to the 40s by daybreak, where they stayed for the rest of the day (bottoming out at 43° just before midnight, the chilliest reading on Mother's Day in the years since 1980). This was just the second Mother's Day to have temperatures in the 40s for the entire afternoon (the other, in 1924, had temperatures in the 40s for the entire day).
And with 1.32" of rain measured (0.01" more than what fell the previous Sunday), this was the fifth time an inch or more of rain fell on Mother's Day (one of those times, in 1946, was also on 5/12).
2020 (Tuesday)
Last week, on 5/5 and 5/7, the humidity in Central Park dropped to 16%, which was the lowest in May since 2007. This afternoon it dropped to 15%, which was the lowest reported in May this century (topped two years later when 13% humidity was reported on 5/9). Despite mostly clear skies, it was a chilly day, with a high of 59°.
2023 (Friday)
ReplyDeleteToday's high of 87° would be the warmest reading of the month, making this May the first since 2009 whose warmest reading was cooler than April's (and it reoccurred the following year, in 2024).
2024 (Sunday)
Today was Mother's Day and it was quite dreary. 0.15" of rain were measured by noon, and skies were overcast the whole day. Temperatures were unseasonably cool, high/low of 57°/48°, ten degrees chillier than average.
Based on high temperature, this Mother's Day was the chilliest since 2018, but afternoon temperatures were the chilliest since 2019, when they were in the 40s.
