Today in New York Weather History: May 10

1874 (Sunday)

The day after the year's first reading in the 80s, today had the first reading in the 90s (90°).  However, the heat was short-lived as a back-door cold front moved through, dropping the mercury to 52° by midnight.  And tomorrow's high would be just 57°.

1879 (Saturday)

For the third day in a row the high/low was 69°/49°.  This was the first time for a three-day streak with the same high and low;it has been replicated just two other times (in May 1984 and August 1988).

May 8 - 69°/49°

May 9 - 69°/49°

   May 10 - 69°/49°

1889 (Friday)

The first reading in the 90s this year (91°) was early, but after today there would be just one more (on June 9).

1914 (Sunday)

The first Mother's Day to be observed as a national holiday was a beauty, with sunny skies and a high of 77°.

1947 (Saturday)

This was the third day in a row with lows in the 30s.  Today's was 36°, yesterday's was 35° and 5/8's was 37°.  All three were records (and all of them stood until 2020, when new records were set on 5/8 and 5/9).  Average low this time of the month is around 50°.

1970 (Sunday)

Today's high was 93°, making this the hottest Mother's Day reading on record.

1979 (Thursday)

For the second day in a row the high temperature was a record 94°.

1987 (Sunday)

Today, with a high of 90°, was the year's first reading in the 90s, three weeks ahead of the typical occurrence.  It was also the second hottest Mother's Day reading on record.

1989 (Wednesday)

A steady, all-day rain (heaviest between 9 AM - 9 PM) amounted to 2.10".  Besides being very wet, the day was also chilly, with a high/low of only 53°/46°, eleven degrees below average.  This was also the first rain to fall on this date since 1974.

1990 (Thursday)

One year after more than two inches of rain fell on this date, 1.67" of rain fell, most of it from thunderstorms between 3-11 PM.

2000 (Wednesday)

After three days in a row with highs in the 90s (and five of 85°+), today saw a return to reality as temperatures fell from 78° shortly after midnight to the mid-50s during the afternoon.  And then rain moved in during the evening, lasting until about 10 PM, amounting to 0.56".

2012 (Thursday)

Rain that fell, mostly before daybreak, made this the eighth day of the past ten in which measurable rain fell, totaling 1.84".

2014 (Saturday)

With a high of 83°, today was the first day this year to warm into the 80s - the latest "first 80" since 1997.  The air had a tropical feel to it and strong thunderstorms moved through at around 5 PM, accompanied by winds that gusted between 40-50 mph.

2015 (Sunday)

Today was Mother's Day and it was partly cloudy, warm and humid, with a high of 83°.  This was one degree warmer than last year's Mother's Day, and the warmest Mother's Day since 1993 (when the high reached 89°).

2020 (Sunday)

For the third year in a row Mother's Day had well below average temperatures.  This year, the low of 39° was the chilliest reading on Mother's Day since 1977 (low of 38°).  However, unlike the previous two years, skies were sunny and the temperature rose to 64°.  Although this was five degrees cooler than average, last year's afternoon temperatures were only in the mid-40s and the year before that they were in the mid-50s.
