This was the second day in a row with a high of 89° (average high is in the upper 60s); however, today's low of 68° was fourteen degrees milder than yesterday's. And today was sunnier.
1937 (Thursday)
The crash of the Hindenburg occurred this evening in Lakehurst, NJ (about 75 miles southwest of New York City). It was never determined what exactly caused the explosion, but thunderstorms were in the area at the time (7:30 PM), so speculation is that it was lightning that ignited the hydrogen gas inside the dirigible. A few hours earlier, in New York, a severe thunderstorm moved through between 4:00 and 5:00, dumping nearly a half-inch of rain.
1977 (Friday)
Today's 0.47" of rain, which fell during a thunderstorm between 3-4 AM, made this the rainiest day of a dry month (1.71" fell in total).
1986 (Tuesday)
Today's high of 92°, a record for the date, was the first 90-degree reading of the year. This was quite a contrast from 1985, which didn't have its first 90-degree day until July 14, the second latest date on record.
1991 (Monday)
A soaking rain, mostly between 5 AM-noon, amounted to 1.39". This was the seventh year in a row to have rain on this date.
Today's high of 63° was the same as on 5/4, and was the coolest high temperature of the month, tying the record previously set in 1969 and 1941 for mildest reading to be the coolest in May. (Typically, the coolest high temperature in May is in the low 50s.)
1992 (Wednesday)
This morning's low of 40° was the chilliest temperature in May since a 38° reading in 1978.
1998 (Wednesday)
For the third day in a row the AM low was 55°, four degrees above average.
2009 (Wednesday)
Between 11:30 PM and midnight 0.63" of rain poured down; half of it fell in just five minutes.
2010 (Thursday)
During the past week temperatures averaged 14 degrees above average (high/low of 81°/62°). This was one month after an eight-day span (April 1-8) averaged 16 degrees above average.
2016 (Friday)
Today was the sixth day in a row with overcast skies (more than we had in the entire month of April) and raw conditions. It was also the 11th day in a row in which temperatures were below average, the longest such streak since last year's bitterly cold February. (I was asked to comment about May's chilly/damp start on this evening's 5:00 and 6:00 newscast on PIX11.)
2023 (Saturday)
Today’s mean temperature was average for the date which meant the end of a 12-day streak with below average temperatures. This was the longest such streak since one of 16 days in April 2020. During this streak temperatures were six degrees below average. With that streak over, today was the first day of a 14-day streak with sunny or clear skies.
In 2025, some Somerset County, NJ towns made it to the mid-upper 70s, while Central Park only made it to 64°.
