Today in New York City Weather History: June 28

1938 (Tuesday)

Rain that fell over the past three days amounted to 3.70".  Today's amount, 1.69", was a record for the date (that still stands).  Besides the rain, today was unseasonably cool, with a high/low of just 60°/57°.

1968 (Friday)

In the past six weeks (since May 18) nearly twelve inches of rain fell, with measurable rain falling on 23 of the 42 days.

1974 (Friday)

At 62° this was the fourth day in a row in which the high temperature was only in the low-to-mid-60s, more typical of mid-April.  During this chilly spell, high temperatures were 20 degrees below average.

1976 (Monday)

Today's high reached 92°, ten degrees above average.  It was the hottest day of the month, and also the 14th day in a row with above-average temperatures.

1977 (Tuesday)

For the fifth year in a row rain fell on this date.  This year's rain, amounting to 0.28", fell during a nighttime thunderstorm between 10:30-11 PM.

1980 (Saturday)

Today was the eighteenth day in a row with no rain.  This came four months after a dry spell of 24 days from Jan. 23 thru Feb. 15.

1989 (Wednesday)

This was the last day of rain this month, bringing May and June's combined rainfall to nineteen inches (normal is eight inches.)  Rain fell during more than half of the days between May 1 and June 28.  (In August 2011, the same amount of rain fell in just one month, and the 18.95" that fell made it the rainiest month in Central Park history.)

1991 (Friday)

Today's sweltering high of 96° was a record for the date.  It was the hottest reading of the year - until tomorrow.

1995 (Wednesday)

This morning's chilly low of 54° was thirteen degrees below average and a record for the date.  It was the coolest reading since a low of 51° on May 16, more than six weeks earlier.

2010 (Monday)

Today's high/low of 93°/76° made this the hottest day of the month.

2015 (Sunday)

The day's high/low of 73°/61° made this the coolest Gay Pride Day since 1996 (when the high was 67°).  Overnight rain was over by daybreak, but gray skies, fog and mist persisted thru early afternoon.

2018 (Thursday)

It felt like a day in the tropics as the dew point rose into the low 70s and two periods of rain dropped 1.36" in Central Park's rain gauge.  From 4-8 AM thunderstorms produced 0.43" of rain, and then during the evening rush hour more than twice that amount (0.93") poured down in just about an hour (mostly 5-6 PM).  Before this downpour, the heat index reached 90° at 3 PM (air temperature was 83°).

After the storm ...

2024 (Friday)

This was the third day this month to see relative humidity fall below 25% (bottoming out at 21% between 1-2 PM) - the most such days in June in the years since 2000.
