Today in New York City Weather History: July 5

1872 (Friday)

This was the sixth day in a row with highs in the 90s, and would be the City's longest heat wave until one of ten days broiled New York in the summer of 1896.

1922 (Wednesday)

This was the fifteenth day of the past nineteen (since June 17) to have measurable rain.  Nearly eight inches fell during these days (average rainfall during this period is close to three inches).  Seven of the days, including today, had more than a half-inch of rain.  And with a high/low of 68°/60°, today was the coolest of these rainy days.

1928 (Thursday)

In what would be the biggest rainstorm of the year, rain began falling this evening and continued thru daybreak tomorrow, dumping 2.87" in Central Park.  The rain was heaviest at the onset, when 0.75" fell from 6-8 PM, and then between 4-5 AM when 0.78" fell.

1950 (Wednesday)

For the first time this year an inch or more of rain fell during a calendar date, the latest occurrence this century (and continuing into the 21st century), and the third latest date overall (behind July 26, 1875 and July 6, 1874).  1.20" poured down during an evening thunderstorm.

 1979 (Thursday)

The morning low of 53° was the coolest reading in July since a low of 52° on July 1, 1943.  (Today's low would be matched nine years later, on 7/1.)  And the day's high recovered to just 69°, fourteen degrees below average.

1988 (Tuesday)

For the third day in a row the high was 88°.  (And in August there would be four days in a row with highs of 89°.)

1989 (Wednesday)

2.05" of rain fell today, most of it between 11 AM-2 PM.  This was the fourth rainstorm of two inches or more in the past two months.

1990 (Thursday)

Today would be the hottest day of the summer, with a high of 95°; the day's low was 76°.

1999 (Monday)

Not surprisingly, today's high of 101° was a record for the date.  It was also the earliest date with a triple-digit temperature since 1966.

2003 (Saturday)

Today's high of 94°, the hottest reading of the month, followed yesterday's low of 63°, which was July's coolest reading.

2004 (Monday)

0.59" of rain poured down between 4:00 and 5:00 AM.

2006 (Wednesday)

1.05" of rain fell this morning, with 0.66" of it coming down between 9:00 and 10:00 AM.

2007 (Thursday)

One year after heavy rain fell in the AM hours, 1.15" of rain fell today between 1-4 AM.  The highs/lows in both years were also very similar (78°/67° this year, 79°/68° last year).

2008 (Saturday)

Showers between noon and 3:00 PM amounted to 0.25", making this the fifth year in a row that rain fell on this date.  With a high of 74°/low of 68°, the day's mean temperature of 71° would be the coolest of the month (four degrees below average).

2024 (Friday)

It was a sultry day with a high of 90° and a heat index in the upper 90s as the dew point hovered mostly between 72° and 74°.  Even a shower shortly before sundown didn't bring any relief as the dew point remained in the 70s (0.10" fell).  Today was the ninth day in the past seventeen with a high of 89° or hotter (seven of them in the 90s).
