Today in New York City Weather History: July 22

1926 (Thursday)

This was the second day in a row with a high of 100° (and both days experienced ten consecutive hours with temperatures of 90°+).  At the time this was just the second summer to have back-to-back days of triple-digit heat (the first was in 1901.)  This came less than two weeks after highs of 96° and 97° on July 9 and 10.  By contrast, in between these four sizzling days there were four days with lows in the upper 50s.

1957 (Monday)

This was the sixth day in a row in which the high was hotter than the day before: 101° (today)-100°-97°-91°-90°-88°-83° (7/16).

1961 (Saturday)

Today would be the hottest day of the year, with a high/low of 97°/76° degrees under clear skies.

1983 (Friday)

One day after severe thunderstorms forced Diana Ross' free concert in Central Park to be cancelled, conditions couldn't have been nicer for today's rescheduled event.  Skies were sunny, the humidity was much lower, and it was 10 degrees cooler than yesterday's mid-90s steam bath.

1989 (Saturday)

This was the last day of an 11-day stretch with below average temperatures.  During these days temperatures were six degrees cooler than normal; four days had afternoon highs that were only in the low 70s.

1998 (Wednesday)

Similar to 1961, today would be the hottest day of the summer as the high topped out at 93° after a very warm low of 78°.

1999 (Thursday)

Between May 25 and today, just one inch of rain fell (0.02" fell today).  The typical amount of rain during this period is approximately 8.50".

2003 (Tuesday)

0.24" of rain fell in a five-minute period between 2:38-2:43 PM.  Rain fell sporadically throughout the day, totaling 1.36".

2008 (Tuesday)

For the third day in a row 0.01" of rain was measured in Central Park.

2011 (Friday)

Today's high soared to an inferno-like 104° (and the "feels-like" temperature was 114°), the hottest temperature in New York since another 104° reading during the summer of 1977.  The only reading hotter than today's was July 9, 1936's all-time high of 106°.  And for the first time since the mid-1950s, triple-digit heat occurred in consecutive summers.  To our west, Newark hit 108°, its highest temperature on record (and the heat index reached 121°).

2013 (Monday)

Today was the eighth day in a row in which the low temperature was 75° or warmer, the second longest such streak on record (there was a streak of nine days in August 1896).  It passed two seven-day streaks in the summers of 2011 and 1953.

2017 (Saturday)

This was the last day of the third heat wave of the year (today's high was 92°).  It lasted four days, one day longer than the heat waves in May and June.  After today, the rest of the month would be four degrees cooler than average.

2018 (Sunday)

The 0.86" of rain that fell late this afternoon and night was 0.03" more than what fell from a coastal storm that lashed the area last night through the pre-dawn hours of this morning.  Today's rainfall brought July's total to 5.88", making it the year's wettest month so far (almost all of the month's rain fell since 7/12).

Although today's air temperature stayed in the 70s all day, the air had a very tropical feel to it as afternoon/evening dew points ranged between 72°-74°.

2019 (Monday)

Shortly before Monday's evening rush hour was about to get underway three rounds of strong thunderstorms brought heavy rain, with 1.66" measured by midnight (most of it fell between 3:45 and 7:30PM).  The storms erupted shortly after the dew point rose to an absurdly high 79°.

Today's downpours (and more rain would fall the following morning) came less than a week after the remnants of hurricane Barry produced 2.33" on 7/17-18.  Before the storms arrived the temperature had reached 90°, making this the fourth day in a row with highs in the 90s.

2020 (Wednesday)

Today was very similar to last year as it was the fifth day in a row with high in the 90s (today's was 92°) before a severe thunderstorm dumped 1.23" of rain between 7-8 PM.  The night's rain brought July's rainfall to 5.53", making it the wettest month of the year (so far).  This was the third year in a row in which an inch or more of rain fell on this date.
