Today in New York City Weather History: July 21

Historically, July 21 is the date most likely to have reported a high in the triple-digits in Central Park.  Since 1869 the mercury has hit 100°+ six times on this date: in 1926, 1930, 1957, 1977, 1980 and 1991.

1885 (Tuesday)

Today's high was 99°, and came in the midst of a sweltering eleven-day period between 7/16 and 7/26 in which eight days were in the 90s.

1930 (Monday)

Today's high reached 102°, which at the time was the hottest temperature reported in Central Park in July (later tied in 1933 and exceeded in 1936).

1957 (Sunday)

Today's high reached 100°, making this the fifth summer of the past six to have at least one day with triple digits - the greatest concentration on record.  (1956 was the only year of the six not to reach 100° - its hottest reading was 99°.)  Tomorrow's high would reach 101° and would be New York's last 100-degree reading until the summer of 1966.

1964 (Thursday)

For the third year in a row 0.03" of rain fell on this date.  However, it fell at a different time of the day each year.

1977 (Thursday)

Today's high of 104° was a record for the date, and the third day of the last four to have a high in triple digits.  Today was also the final day of a nine-day heat wave that saw afternoon highs average 97° (twelve degrees above average).  This heat wave is associated with the infamous 1977 blackout, which occurred on the evening of the heat wave's first day (7/13).

 1980 (Monday)

This was the second day in a row of triple-digit heat.  Today's high/low 102°/82° would make this the hottest day of the year.

1983 (Thursday)

A free concert by Diana Ross in Central Park was interrupted, and ultimately postponed, when severe thunderstorms rumbled through the area between 6:30 and 10 PM (2.26" of rain fell, two-thirds of the month's total precipitation).  It was also a hot day as the high reached 95°, the ninth day of 90-degree weather in the past ten days.

 1988 (Thursday)

In the past five days more than five inches of rain fell from tropical downpours.  Today, 1.65" poured down between 7 PM-1 AM.  This was also the eighteenth day in a row with above-average temperatures.  Sixteen of the days had highs of 88° or hotter.

1990 (Saturday)

An evening thunderstorm produced 1.11" of rain in just 45 minutes (6:06-6:51 PM).

1991 (Sunday)

Today's high of 102° made this the hottest reading of the summer.  The last time it was this hot in Central Park was on this date in 1980.  Some relief arrived when a thunderstorm dropped 0.46" of rain between 6-7 PM.  This was the second day in a row with a high in the triple digits.

This was  the 25th day this year with a high of 90°+, which is the earliest date for this number of hot days in Central Park (through 2025).  It bested 1966 by one day.

1997 (Monday)

0.81" of rain fell in a 45-minute period between 11:05-11:50 PM. (Actually, the rain fell between 12:05-12:50 on 7/22, but the National Weather Service uses Standard Time year-round and doesn't recognize Daylight Saving Time.)

2006 (Friday)

1.95" of rain fell mostly during two storms, one from 9-10 AM when 0.84" fell, and the other between 4-5 PM when 0.70" was measured.  During the morning deluge, 0.69" fell in a 10-minute period.

2008 (Monday)

This was the last day of a six-day heat wave, which accounted for half of the summer's 90-degree days.  High temperatures during these days ranged between 92° and 96°.

2011 (Thursday)

This was the fourth morning in a row with a low of 75°.  Dew points this afternoon were in the extremely uncomfortable 75° to 77° range, which, combined with an air temperature of 97°, produced a heat index of 110°

2019 (Sunday)

Today's high of 95° matched yesterday's, and both days had lows in the 80s (82° yesterday, 80° today).  The dew point peaked at 77° during mid-afternoon today; it was the highest so far this summer, and produced a heat index of 107°.  This was the fifth day of the past six to have highs in the 90s.  The outlier was 7/18, which had temperatures stuck in the 70s all day due to afternoon winds out of the northeast.

2022 (Thursday)

After peaking at 92° late in the morning, the temperature tumbled to 74° during a brief downpour in the early afternoon, but after skies cleared the mercury climbed to 91° by early evening.  The dew point in the afternoon held steady at a very oppressive 76° from 2:00 through 6:00.  This was the third day in a row with a high in the 90s.  At 11:00 the temperature was still at 88°.
