Today in New York City Weather History: June 26

1884 (Thursday)

Almost all of June's 4.98" of rain poured down during a rainstorm that began yesterday evening and continued into today.  In total, 4.74" of rain was measured, with 4.29" of it falling today. (At the time this was the third greatest daily rainfall; it's now ranked 21st.) Interestingly, this is the only year in which an inch or more of rain has fallen on this date (four years later 0.99" would fall).  Today was also unseasonably cool, with a high/low of 67°/58°.

1952 (Thursday)

Today's high/low was a torrid 100°/81°.  The low was New York's warmest reading on record for the month of June, and the high was the earliest reading in the triple digits (next earliest would come in 1966 on June 27).  This heat came just three days after a high/low of just 64°/58°.

1979 (Tuesday)

For the second day in a row a record low was set.  Yesterday's was 54°, today's 56°.

1989 (Monday)

0.65" of rain fell in an hour during a strong thunderstorm between 9-10 PM.  This followed a high of 90° earlier in the day.

2003 (Thursday)

The low of 79°, thirteen degrees above average, tied June 10, 1984 for the warmest low temperature in the month of June since a low of 81° on this date in 1952. (In 2025 there would be a three-day streak with lows in the 80s from 6/23 to 6/25.)

And today's high of 93° was the third day in a row with a high in the 90s, making this the fourth year in a row to start its 90-degree "season" with a heat wave, the longest such streak on record (going back to 1869).

2005 (Sunday)

Today's high was a sizzling 92°, eleven degrees above average, making this the hottest reading of any Gay Pride Day parade

2010 (Saturday)

Six of the past seven days had lows of 71°.  Typical low during these days is in the mid-60s.

2022 (Sunday)

The Gay Pride Parade was marched in sunny and hot conditions, with a high/low of 89°/74°.  The low and mean temperatures were the warmest of June, while the high was the second hottest of the month, one degree below the day before.  The last time the low on the day of the Gay Pride Parade was as warm as this year's was in 2005 (the warmest low on Gay Pride Sunday is 75°, occurring in 1999).

2024 (Wednesday)

With a high of 93°, this was the sixth day of the past seven with a high in the 90s (ranging from 90° to 94°).  And today was the eighth day of the past nine with a low in the 70s (ranging from 70° to 76°).

2025 (Thursday)

A back-door cold front moved through just as the day was dawning, providing relief from a torrid 3-day heat wave that had an average high/low of 97°/81°.  Between 10 AM and 5 PM temperatures hovered between 69° and 70°; skies were overcast and there was a stiff breeze out of the east-northeast.
