Today in New York City Weather History: June 19

1949 (Sunday)

Today and yesterday were the only two days this June with measurable rain, and just 0.01" fell each day, making this the driest month on record (until October 2024).  Each day also had a nearly identical high/low - 83°/70° yesterday, and 83°/71° today (and 6/17 had a high/low of 83°/71°).

1992 (Friday)

For the second year in a row the high/low was stuck in the 60s on this date.  This year the high/low was 69°/65°; last year it was 66°/62°.  Both days had steady rain from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, with 0.42" and 0.64" measured, in '92 and '91, respectively.

1994 (Sunday)

Today was the hottest day of the summer as the high reached 98° after a low of 75° (fifteen degrees above average).  This tied June 22, 1988 for the hottest temperature in June since 1966's 101°.  It was also the hottest Father's Day on record.  And today's high broke the previous record (95°) set just last year.  This is the last time a reading was in the 90s on this date (through 2024).

2016 (Sunday)

It was a bee-yoo-ti-ful Father's Day, with a high/low of 88°/66° under bright blue skies.

2017 (Monday)

For the second day in a row, tropical conditions prevailed.  With a high of 88° and dew points in the low 70s, the heat index reached 96°.  The heat broke late in the afternoon when strong thunderstorms moved through, dumping 1.28" of rain, mostly between 4:30 and 6:30 (an additional 0.07" fell just before midnight).  And at 7 PM the dew point fell below 70° for the first time since daybreak on the 18th.

2022 (Sunday)

It was a beautiful Father’s Day despite it being ten degrees chillier than average (high/low of 73°/54°), along with a stiff breeze that persisted throughout the day (but not as windy as yesterday, which had wind gusts of 30-40 mph).  This was the first Father’s Day since 2012 not to have a high of 80° or warmer (the average between 2013 and 2021 was 85°).  And the last time the low temperature was this chilly on Father’s Day was in 1958.  Furthermore, humidity late in the afternoon dropped to 25%, which was comparable to the humidity level on Father's Day in 2018 (24%).

2024 (Wednesday)

Under sunny skies the high reached 89° shortly after noon, but with a dew point of 72° the heat index was a scorching 96°.  At the time both readings were the hottest of the year in Central Park.

2025 (Thursday)

It was a sweltering day as the high reached 88° and the dew point peaked at 75° (producing a heat index of 96°).  The high might have reached 90° if not for a thunder shower that moved through in the early afternoon.  And more thunder showers popped up for the rest of the day, amounting to 0.65".

This was the sixth day in a row with measurable rain. In total, 1.11" fell during these days, with more than half of it accounted for by today's rainfall.
