1875 (Sunday)
This was the second day in a row with mid-winter cold as today's high/low of 32°/25° followed yesterday's 33°/27°. These highs were 25 degrees below average.
1878 (Thursday)
Today was the sixth day this month with a low of 42°, which was the chilliest reading of the month. This is the mildest reading to have the designation as the chilliest temperature of any April. (In the years between 1869-1899 the coldest reading in April was typically in the upper 20s).
1887 (Monday)
Rain changed to snow,
accumulating 3.0". This followed a two-inch snowfall on April
1-2. Today's snow was a week earlier than the latest measurable snowfall
on record, in 1875, when there was a three-inch snowfall on 4/25.
1896 (Saturday)
For the first time since record-keeping began, Central Park had a reading in the 90s in April (it was also the first time a day with high of 90+ started with a low in the 50s; the second such occurrence would be three weeks later). This followed highs of 87° and 88° on the two preceding days. 1896 would have 24 days in the 90s, which would be the most in one year until 1936.
1972 (Tuesday)
This year's home opener for the Yankees was a carbon copy of last year's, i.e., sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 60s.
1976 (Sunday)
Under clear skies, it was a sizzling Easter Sunday as the high soared to 96°. This was 33 degrees above average and the hottest temperature ever reported in April (later tied in 2002). Prior to today, the earliest date for a temperature of 96° or higher was May 19, 1962, when the mercury rose to 99°.
1979 (Wednesday)
Today's low temperature, and that of the previous three days, was one degree higher than the day before: 45° (today), 44° (4/17), 43° (4/16) and 42° (4/15). And the lows on 4/14 and 4/13 were 40° and 42°. These lows readings were close to the seasonal average.
1980 (Friday)
It was a very pleasant day for the Yankees' home opener as skies were sunny and the temperature rose into the mid-60s. Unfortunately, for the second year in a row the Yankees lost.
1982 (Sunday)
This was the eighteenth day in a row in which no high temperature was duplicated. During these days the highs ranged from 30° to 72°.
2002 (Thursday)
The morning low was a stifling 76°, which would be uncomfortable even in the middle of the summer. This was 13 degrees warmer than the average high for the day and is the warmest daily low ever reported in April. And although the high was 92°, it wasn't a record, as the record for the date was 96°, set in 1976.
2015 (Saturday)
Three days after reaching the 70s for the first time this year, which was three weeks behind schedule, today's high reached 80°, a few days ahead of schedule. (And while this year's first 60+ and first 70+ came later than last year, 2014's first 80° didn't happen until 5/11.)
2016 (Monday)
Just like last year, today had the first reading of the year in the 80s. This was also the sixth day in a row with mostly clear skies and very low humidity. In fact, today's relative humidity was below 20% from 11 AM until 5 PM and dropped to 13% at 4PM - the lowest since March 12 of last year, when it dropped to 12%.
2024 (Thursday)
It was a raw, gray and breezy day with a chilly high of 50°. (With the exception of one hour, the mercury was stuck at 47° from daybreak thru midnight.). This followed highs of 62° yesterday, 73° the day before that, and 82° on 4/15.
