Since 1980, the average date of the first reading of 80° or warmer warmer is April 21 (a month later than the average date of the first reading of 70°+ This is about a week earlier than 1900-1979, and two weeks earlier than the 1869-1899 period. It's happened as early as March 10 (in 2026) and as late as June 7 (in 1924).

2000 (Friday)
My flight to Pittsburgh, for an Easter visit to see my mother, was delayed six hours due to inclement weather in the Mid-Atlantic states. 1.62" of rain fell in Central Park, with more than half of it coming down between noon-3 PM. It was also chilly, as the high got up to just 49°, fourteen degrees below average.

2012 (Saturday)
Under sunny skies, today's high reached 71°, the last day this month to be in the 70s. April had seven 70-degree days in total, one less than the exceptionally mild March.
2023 (Friday)
With just 0.40" of rain measured through today, this was the driest first three weeks in April since April 1968 (when 0.18" was reported). And since 4/2 just 0.02" of rain had fallen; and less than an inch since 3/15. (Three years later, 0.67" fell in the first three weeks of the month.)
2021 (Wednesday)
ReplyDeleteAfter peaking at 68° shortly before 2 PM, a strong cold front shoved its way into the area and in just a few hours the mercury fell below 50°. As the front passed, 0.11" of rain was measured, and the mercury was down to 39° at midnight.
2025 (Monday)
During the exceptionally warm last 12 days period of the month, today and 4/27 were outliers. Today was overcast and chilly with temperatures stuck in the 50s all day.
in 2026, there were already seven 80° days before April 21 (the most 80° days on record in a year through April 21). by comparison, all but six of the 49 years before 2026 had less than three 80° days through April 21.
