Today in New York Weather History: February 27

1873 (Thursday)

A snowfall of four inches was the fifth this month of two inches or more.  (The month's total snowfall amounted to 18.9".)  This was the first time measurable snow fell on this date and, 151 years later, the amount that fell is still the most on this date.

1910 (Sunday)

Today's high of 51° was the first in the 50s since Dec. 14, a span of nearly eleven weeks.

1926 (Saturday)

Today's high of 33° was the ninth this winter, tying the winter of 1905 for the most 33-degree highs.  (February also had eight days with highs of 32° or colder.)

 1940 (Tuesday)

Two inches of snow fell during the afternoon and evening.  This was the last time an inch or more of snow fell on this date (through 2025).  It was also quite cold, with a high/low of 28°/16°, tying it with the previous day (high/low of 29°/15°) for coldest mean temperature this month.

1981 (Friday)

In the past twelve days, the mean temperature was 15 degrees above average (high/low of 55°/43°).

1988 (Saturday)

It was a raw Saturday, with periods of wet snow that accumulated 0.6".  This would be the last measurable snowfall of the winter.  In total, eighteen inches of snow fell during the winter (eight inches below average).

1992 (Thursday)

Morning lows of today and the previous three days were: 36°-35°-34°-33° (today).

1996 (Tuesday)

It was a month of wild temperature swings, and today was the seventeenth day in which the mean temperature was either ten degrees or more above or below average.  Today, with a high of 58°, was the ninth day in a row that was ten+ degrees above average.  (After the first week of the month was 13 degrees colder than average, the last ten days of the month were 12 degrees above average.)

1997 (Thursday)

Today's high of 72° (twenty-eight degrees above average) was the third record high in the past nine days, but it was just two days after a low of 19°, which came three days after a high of 69°.   At the time, this was the third mildest February (it's since fallen to tenth mildest).

2002 (Wednesday)

Light showers late in the morning amounted to 0.05" and brought February's total precipitation to 0.71", making it the driest February since 1901, and third driest on record.  (It would also be the third mildest February - now ranked seventh).

2013 (Wednesday)

A nor'easter lashed the area overnight with howling winds that gusted between 40-50 mph throughout the region.  By the time the storm moved out late this morning, 1.54" of rain had poured down.  This was a record amount for the date, breaking the old record from 100 years ago.

2023 (Monday)

The second measurable snowfall of the winter (the first, a mere 0.4", was on 2/1) began this evening and brought 1.8" of snow (half of it fell today, the other half in the overnight hours).  Three to seven inches fell in outlying suburbs, where temperatures were colder.  This would be the most significant snowfall of what became the least snowy winter on record.
