Four days before Easter, a late season snowstorm dumped 6.5". Beginning as rain a little after midnight, it changed over to snow around 2 AM and later mixed with sleet around lunchtime before ending in mid-afternoon. The snow came down heavily between 3-5 AM, when three inches accumulated. The day's high/low was just 34°/29°. (Two days later, on Good Friday, the temperature would rise into the upper 60s.)
1977 (Tuesday)
The 2.94" of rain that fell between April 2 and today accounted for much of the month's rain. Then, a 19-day period with no measurable rain would begin tomorrow.
1984 (Thursday)
After 1.61" of rain fell yesterday, an additional 2.76" poured down today, for a two-day total of 4.37". This storm was the biggest rain producer since November 1977. Rain fell for thirty-one consecutive hours and ended shortly after 4:00 this afternoon. This storm came a week after 2.60" of precipitation fell during a nor'easter.
1988 (Tuesday)
The Yankees' home opener was played under sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s. Today's high reached 73°, sixteen degrees above average and the mildest reading of the month. (The Yankees wouldn't play another home opener with temperatures in the 70s until 2017.)
1989 (Wednesday)
After today's high of 77° (20 degrees above average), the temperature would go no higher than 58° over the next 11 days and average five degrees below average.
1995 (Wednesday)
Today's high was only 39°, eighteen degrees colder than average, and twenty-nine degrees colder than yesterday afternoon. And the low of 23° was the coldest in April since 1982, when the low was 21° on 4/7.
2002 (Friday)
For the third year in a row, the weather for the Yankees' home opener was very chilly, with a high of only 45°, twelve degrees colder than average. (Tampa Bay's bats were chilled as well as they managed just three hits and were shut out, 4-0.)
2006 (Wednesday)
The 0.1" of snow that fell today brought the season's total to exactly 40 inches, making this the unprecedented fourth winter in a row with 40 inches or more of snowfall. Most of the winter's snow fell on Feb. 11-12 when the City was buried by 26.9", New York's biggest snowstorm of all time (broken ten years later by the blizzard of Jan. 23, 2016, which dumped 27.5".)
2010 (Monday)
It was a fine spring day for the Mets' home opener as the temperature rose into the mid-70s, eighteen degrees above average - the warmest weather for the team's home opener in nine years.
2012 (Thursday)
Skies were sunny and temperatures in the seasonable upper 50s as the Mets won their home opener over Atlanta, 1-0.
2016 (Tuesday)
After experiencing June-like warmth on 4/1 (high/low of 79°/61°), today's temperatures were similar to those of mid-February. This morning's low of 26° was the coldest temperature since 3/3 - and the coldest reading in April since 1995 (also on 4/5). And after being rained out yesterday, the Yankees played their rescheduled home opener today in the chilliest conditions since Opening Day 2003.
2026 (Sunday)
Today was Easter Sunday and the 0.19" of rain that fell during the afternoon was the most to fall on this holiday since 2002 when 0.28" was measured. Temperatures were seasonable.
