Today in New York City Weather History: April 7

April 7 is a study in contrasts.  Not only is it the latest date for a sub-freezing high temperature (in 1982), it's also the earliest date for a high in the 90s (in 2010).

1891 (Tuesday)

For the fourth day in a row skies were overcast (but no rain) and the cold highs/lows were nearly the same: 40°/31° on 4/4; 40°/29° on 4/5; 41°/29° on 4/6; and 40°/30° today.  These temperatures were 13 degrees colder than average.

1929 (Sunday)

The temperature jumped from 46° to 89°, thirty-two degrees above average.  (Yesterday's high was 59°.)  At the time this was the earliest date for a temperature so warm.

1977 (Thursday)

The Yankees played their home opener under sunny skies, but in very chilly conditions.  After a morning low of 31°, the game was played with temperatures in the mid-40s.  At least skies were sunny.

1978 (Friday)

A warm front moved through just as the Mets' home opener was beginning, and over the course of the afternoon the temperature rose from 47° to 63°.

1982 (Wednesday)

In the aftermath of yesterday's 9.6" snowstorm, the morning low was 21°, twenty-one degrees below average and the coldest reading so late in the year since April 1, 1923 (when the temperature dropped to 12°).  Today's afternoon high of 30° was the latest date on record for a sub-freezing high.

1990 (Saturday)

The last snowfall of the winter fell at around daybreak, a surprise 0.6".  It didn't last long, however, as the temperature rebounded into the low 50s under sunny skies.  A total of 13.4" of snow fell during the winter, about half the average amount, and the third winter in a row with well below average snowfall.

2003 (Monday)

Four inches of snow fell in the morning through early afternoon, the biggest April snowfall in twenty-one years.  This brought the season's snowfall total close to 50 inches.  And like 1982's snowfall, today's happened on the day of the Yankees' home opener, which was postponed.

2010 (Wednesday)

The afternoon high hit 92°, an incredibly hot temperature for so early in the season.  In fact, it was New York's earliest 90-degree reading on record, besting the previous record from 1991 by one day.  This temperature was 34 degrees above average - even in mid-July, today's high would have been five degrees hotter than normal.  At 11 PM it was still 80°.

The next 90-degree reading wouldn't be for seven weeks, when the high reached 92° on May 26.  (Then there would be 35 more days in the 90s after this date.)

 2014 (Monday)

Morning sunshine dimmed by mid-day and rain moved in late in the afternoon, but it held off until the Yankees' home opener had ended (they beat the Orioles 4-2).  The game was played under overcast skies with temperatures in the slightly below average low 50s.

2015 (Tuesday)

Two-and-a-half weeks after a four-day streak with lows of 29°, today was the fourth day in a row with a low of 42°, which was at the seasonal average.  Highs during these days were also very similar: 60°-61°-63°-62°, three or four degrees above average.

2020 (Tuesday)

Today's high of 68° would be the mildest reading of the month.  This became the first April since 1940 to have no readings in the 70s or warmer.  (Since 2000 the average warmest reading in April has been 85°.)

2022 (Thursday)

Rain moved in at around noon and continued for the rest of the day.  1.11" was measured, with a large portion of it (0.40") falling between 11 PM-midnight (an additional 0.04" fell on 4/8.  Suburbs in northern NJ, the Hudson River valley, and western Connecticut reported amounts between two and four inches.  Besides the rain, it was also windy, with gusts of 20-30 mph.  This inclement weather forced the Yankees to postpone its home opener - the fifth home opener postponed since 2003.

2023 (Friday)

The home opener for the Mets, delayed by one day, was played in seasonable temperatures and under mostly sunny skies.  (Yesterday's game was postponed because rain was forecast, but none fell and the high reached 80°.)  Afternoon humidity was very low and dipped to 16% as the game was getting under way.   Save

2025 (Monday)

Today was the ninth day of the past eleven in which Central Park received measurable rain.  During these days 2.61" of rain was measured (0.13" fell today, mostly during the afternoon).  On this dreary, raw day, the temperature during the PM hours was stuck at 42°.
