1910 (Friday)
The biggest snowfall of the winter buried the City under an accumulation of 10" (0.5" of it fell on 1/15). This topped an eight-inch snowfall on 12/25-26. Today's amount was a record for the date (which still stands).
1923 (Sunday)
Snow began falling after 10 AM, and by 5 PM, 7.8" had accumulated, then it changed to light rain for the next three hours as the temperature rose into the mid-30s. This was the second biggest snowfall of the winter, coming ten days after nine inches had piled up.
1977 (Friday)
The five inches of snow that fell during the afternoon and evening would be the biggest snowfall of the winter.
1982 (Thursday)
A quick-moving clipper system dropped 3.5" of snow during the afternoon, one day after 5.8" fell in the evening.
1988 (Thursday)
Today's high of 17°/low of +5° made this the coldest day of the winter, twenty-one degrees below average.
1998 (Wednesday)
Today was the month's second, and last, day with colder than average temperatures (high of 33°/low of 23°).
1999 (Thursday)
Despite very cold temperatures (high of 22°/low of 15°) light snow became mixed with sleet and freezing rain, accumulating two inches.
2004 (Wednesday)
Typically, based on a 1:10 water-to-snow conversion ratio, today's 0.15" of liquid precipitation should have produced 1.5 inches of snow. However, because it was such a frigid day (high of 17°/low of 9°), with low humidity, this amount of precipitation produced 5.7" of fluffy snow. The snow began last night and continued until just before daybreak.
2005 (Friday)
Today's high of 66°, which occurred in the pre-dawn hours, was the 17th day in a row with above average readings. About an inch of rain fell in the morning and afternoon as cold air moved in. Then a streak of 17 consecutive days with below average temps would begin tomorrow.
2006 (Saturday)
1.17" of rain fell today, one year after 1.04" fell on the same date. And in both years the temperature dropped like a rock after passage of a cold front. This year the mercury dropped from 57° to 31°, while last year it plummeted from 66° to 34°.
2013 (Monday)
Today was the sixth day in a row in which the mean temperature was 10 degrees or more above average. During this streak the high and low averaged 49°/40°, 13 degrees above average. Today's high of 56° was the mildest reading during these six days. This was New York's longest such streak since one of eight days in March 2012.
2023 (Saturday)
For the first time this year the temperature fell to 32°. Only 2005 started with a longer streak, with its first reading of 32° or colder happening on 1/15. Additionally, the day's high of 38° would be the coldest high of the month, the mildest temperature on record to be the coldest high in any January - breaking the previous record by five degrees. (On average, the coldest high temperature in January is in the low 20s.) Finally, this was also the 18th day in a row with above average temperatures.
