Today in New York City Weather History: February 10

1908 (Monday)

This was the eighth day of the past nine with a high of 32° or colder.  The one day with a high warmer than 32°, Feb. 6, had eight inches of snow.  The average high/low during these nine days was 27°/13°.

1926 (Wednesday)

Less than a week after a fierce blizzard brought 10.4" of snow and sleet (accompanied by wind gusts of 40-45 mph), another snowstorm dumped a foot on the City, much of it falling this morning between 3-9 AM (light snow began last night and accumulated 1.6").  Winds from this storm gusted between 30-35 mph.  Temperatures in the morning held steady in the low 20s, then fell during the afternoon, reaching 11° as midnight approached.

1933 (Friday)

Today's low of 11° tied Dec. 17 for the coldest reading of the winter.  This was the third winter in a row with no lows in the single digits or colder, the longest streak of its kind.  (A typical winter has six such days.  The next three winters, by contrast, would have 36 days with lows below 10°).

1975 (Monday)

Although Jan. 21 had the coldest reading of the winter (15°), today was the coldest day, based on the mean temperature, with a high/low of 28°/16°.

1977 (Thursday)

Today's low of 33° was the first that was above freezing this year, the deepest into a year for this occurrence since 1881 (when it happened on the same date).  Only 1875 has had a later date (Feb. 23).

1990 (Saturday)

0.41" of rain fell in just 45 minutes (9:45-10:15 AM).  This was the first measurable precipitation to fall on this date in 20 years.

1991 (Sunday)

In the past nine days, temperatures averaged 17 degrees above average (high/low of 56°/41°), more typical of the last week of March.

1994 (Thursday)

Today was the 25th day this winter with a high temperature of 32° or colder, one day more than the previous three winters combined.

2001 (Saturday)

The temperature plummeted from a record high of 61° to 27°.

2010 (Wednesday)

Four days after a monster snowstorm stopped just short of New York's doorstep, another made its presence known, dumping 10" of heavy, wet snow.  Because daytime temperatures were a bit above freezing (the high was 34°), main streets didn't see much accumulation.  (Photo below was taken from my apartment looking down onto a courtyard below.)

 2018 (Saturday)

The 0.58" of rain that fell today brought the amount of February's precipitation to 2.62", which was more than the entire month of January (2.18"), December (2.21") or November (1.58").  Today's rain was the third significant rainfall this week (and the rain continued overnight).

2026 (Tuesday)

Today was the last day of a 19-day streak with highs colder than 40°, the longest such streak since the winter of 2004, when there was one of 21 days.  During this streak, the average high/low was 27°/14°, which was 13 degrees colder than average.

  1. 2026 - this was the 19th day in a row with a high under 40°, joining 3 other years this century with a streak this long of this kind. all of which began in mid January & ended in early February. 2000 & 2004 had a streak of 21 days & 2003 had a streak of 19 days.
