Today in New York City Weather History: January 9

In the years since 1970, Jan. 9 is the date most likely to see a high temperature of 32° or colder, which has happened in twenty-one of the 56 years.  (Ironically, in 2018 the temperature rose above 32° for the first time on Jan. 9, snapping a two-week cold wave - the third longest on record.)

1884 (Wednesday)

Today's high of 48° would be the mildest reading of the month, making this this the fourth year in a row in which the mildest reading in January was below 50°.

1948 (Friday)

With a high of 45°, this was the only day between Dec. 23 and Feb. 11 (more than seven weeks) to have a high above 40°.

1968 (Tuesday)

This was the fourteenth day since Dec. 22 to have measurable precipitation.  And on nine of the days the precipitation fell as snow, which amounted to 9.1".  Today also had the coldest reading of the winter, one degree below zero.  (Today's light snow would be the last accumulating snow until the last day of February.)  This was one of eight days this winter with a low colder than 10°.  Today's high of 14° was one degree higher than yesterday's.

1970 (Friday)

The day's low of would be the coldest reading of the winter.  And similar to 1968 on this date, the high recovered to just 14°.

1978 (Monday)

Just two days after there was a one-degree difference between the day's high/low (36°/35°), today saw the temperature plummet by 43 degrees, from 59° at 4 AM to 15° at midnight.  After 0.60" of rain fell in the morning (ending at 9:00), an inch of snow fell in the middle of the afternoon, blown around by winds gusting to 30 mph.

1985 (Wednesday)

With a high/low of 25°/16°, today was the first day of the winter that was completely below freezing.  It was only the fifth time this century that it occurred in January (it would happen five more times in the next 30 years).  At the time, only the winter of 1975 recorded a later date for the first high temperature of 32° or colder, which was Jan. 14.  (Two years later, in 1987, that record was broken when the first such high didn't occur until Jan. 20.)

2015 (Friday)

Although snow that fell this morning amounted to just 1.5", it was magnified by the fact that it was more than predicted and fell during the morning commute (6-9 AM).  During the afternoon the temperature rose to 33°, the first time it was above freezing in four days.

2018 (Tuesday)

Shortly before daybreak the temperature rose above freezing for the first time this year - and for the first time since Christmas Day.  This 14-day streak of sub-freezing temperatures was the longest such streak since the winter of 1961's 16-day streak, and the third longest streak on record (the winter of 1881 had a cold wave that lasted fifteen days).  Additionally, only January 1918 had a colder start than January 2018.

2020 (Thursday)

With a high/low of 34°/23°, three degrees below average, this was the only day between Dec. 22 and Jan. 16 that was colder than average.  The other 25 days were ten degrees above average (high/low of 50°/37°).

2024 (Tuesday)

After a sunny morning, a powerful storm affecting the South, Midwest, and Ohio Valley moved into the New York area, bringing strong winds that gusted between 35-45 mph, and a hard rain after dark. The 1.73" of rain that fell today was a record amount for the date (rain after midnight added 0.22" to 1/9's total).  The day's high of 57° was reached as midnight approached, and was the mildest reading since 12/18.
