JANUARY
9 - Today and the previous two days, NYC was buffeted by high winds gusting between 35-45 mph each day. Although there was no precipitation to contend with, temperatures were seven degrees colder than average, with highs/lows of 33°/19°, 30°/23°, and 33°/22° (today).
18 - Until today the only precipitation that had fallen this month was snow, but when 0.09" of rain fell this afternoon, it was the deepest into January for its first measurable rainfall since 1896 (when the month's first rain fell on 1/24).
31 - This was just the fifth day this month to have measurable rain. The 0.16” that fell, mostly after dark, brought the month’s paltry total to 0.61”, finishing with just 0.03” more than Central Park’s driest January on record, in 1981.
FEBRUARY
6 - Although today's accumulation of snow/ice (before dawn) was just 0.5", this was the first accumulating snow to fall on 2/6 in Central Park since 2004 (when 0.7" "piled" up). Despite this lengthy hiatus, Feb. 6 is tied with Jan. 27 as the second most likely date to report measurable snowfall. (Feb. 3 is ranked #1, having had 30 years w/snow, one more than Feb. 6 and Jan. 27.)
MARCH
1 - Today' s high of 64° was the first reading in the 60s this year (about a month later than usual) and the mildest reading since 11/18. (This rise into the 60s was a surprise as the predicted high was mid-50s). But this touch of spring lasted just a few hours as an Arctic front moved through after 2 PM, dropping the temperature to the upper 20s as midnight approached (on the way to a low of 20° at daybreak on 3/2). This 36-degree slide in temperature was the greatest drop during a calendar date since a drop of 50 degrees on Dec. 23, 2022 (from 58° to 8°).
5 - A rainstorm lashed the area between 4-11:30 PM, producing 1.71" of rain; this was 0.10" below the record amount for the date in 1920. Between 6-7 PM 0.63" poured down, which was more than what fell in all of January. This was Central Park's biggest daily rainfall since 8/18, when 2.29" was measured.
7 - Just two days after a soaking rain, the humidity dropped to 16% this evening. This was the lowest humidity reading since last April (15% on 4/26). It was also the tenth day this year with very low humidity (a reading of 25% or lower), the most by this date of any year this century (on average, there are three by 3/7).
22 - Today was the last day of a 19-day streak with above average temperatures, a period that was six degrees above average. This was the longest above-average streak since last winter when there was one of 22 days. (And the previous winter there had been a streak of 36 days.)
27 - Late this afternoon, Central Park's humidity level fell to 13%, making this the 15th day this month with a humidity level of 25% or lower - the most days of any month this century. This broke a tie with May 2023. A typical March has five days with very low humidity (the previous high in March was 12 in 2023).
29 - Until today, the mildest reading of the year had been 66° nearly three weeks ago, but this afternoon's high soared to 81°, making 2025 just the ninth year that Central Park's first reading in the 80s occurred in March. And it was third year to have 3/29 as the date for its first-80 (the other years were 1977 and 1985.) The previous time a first-80 was in March was four years ago. (Average date is 4/21.) Additionally, this year was the 12th to share the date of its first-80 with the date of its first 70+ reading.
A few hours after this high was reached the mercury tumbled by 26 degrees in just one hour, between 5-6 PM (from 79° to 53°), the result of a back-door cold front. And by midnight the temperature had fallen an additional ten degrees. This 38-degree plunge bested the 37-degree drop on 3/1.
This drastic change came the day after the anniversary of Central Park's greatest one-hour drop on record - 28 degrees on March 28, 1921 (from 81° to 53°).
30 - The day after NYC had its first reading in the 80s this year, today's high was only 48° (seven degrees below average). This is the first time on record that a first-80 was followed by a high in the 40s.
APRIL
4 - Overnight temperatures stayed in the low 70s (where they'd been since late afternoon yesterday), which was thirty degrees milder than average for the pre-dawn hours during the first week of April. This would be the warmest part of the day, but temperatures stayed in the 60s, still well above average. AM clouds became mixed with sunshine as the afternoon progressed. Today was Opening Day for the Mets, who shut out Toronto.
7 - Today was the ninth day of the past eleven in which Central Park received measurable rain. During these days 2.61" of rain was measured (0.13" fell today, mostly during the afternoon). On this dreary, raw day, the temperature was stuck at 42° during the PM hours.
9 - This morning's low of 31° was Central Park's first low of freezing or colder in April since 2021, and the latest date for a sub-freezing reading since 2016 (when it fell on 4/10). It was also the first low this cold since 3/23.
10 - Including today, the last four times measurable rain fell on this date the amount was 0.01" (2025, 2021, 2020, and 2018).
12 - Rainy and cold with a high/low of 40°/36°. The high was 21 degrees below average and was the coldest daily high since 3/3 (when the high was 39°). Since yesterday evening 1.04" of rain fell in Central Park (0.63" of it fell today). This was the ninth day this month with measurable rainfall.
19 - One week after the high struggled to reach 40° (21 degrees colder than average), today's high jumped to 85° (22 degrees warmer than average). This was the warmest reading in Central Park since the end of August.
20 - It was a beautiful Easter Sunday, with nary a cloud in the sky. Afternoon temperatures were slightly above average, rising into the upper 60s (however, the day's high was 73°, occurring between midnight and 1 AM). Late in the afternoon the humidity fell to 15%, which was similar to the humidity level on Easter Sunday two years ago.
26 - A quick-moving evening thunderstorm dumped 0.61" of rain between 7:00-7:30. It was a mild day with a high of 74°, but cooler air behind the storm dropped the temperature to 53° as midnight approached. This was the fifth day in a row with a high in the 70s/80s (and the seventh of the past eight), the longest such streak since Oct. 19-23.
MAY
3 - After a balmy, summer-like day that saw the high temperature reach 85° (the day after a high of 84°), a strong thunderstorm tonight dumped 0.95" of rain in less than an hour - and almost all it rain poured down in about 20 minutes (10:20-10:40). This storm was very localized as just 0.27" of rain fell at Newark Airport, and no rain was measured at LaGuardia or JFK. This deluge came a week after 0.61" fell in a 30-minute period (7:00-7:30).
4 - With a high/low of 69°/60°, today became the earliest date on record with temperatures stuck in the 60s in Central Park. The previous earliest date was 5/11 in 1888.
22 - Rainy conditions (0.90" was measured at Central Park) and winds from out of the northeast produced very cool conditions, with the day's high/low being just 51°/48°. The day's high was 22 degrees below average and was the coolest high temperature on record for 5/22, three degrees cooler than the previous record from 1894.
JUNE
9 - With a high/low of 64°/62°, today was the first date since May 13, 2018 (Mother's Day) to have just a two-degree diurnal variation in temperature.
12 - Today was a Thursday and, in a repeat of last Thursday's conditions, today was sunny, warm and humid with a high/low of 87°/70°.
15 - Today was Father's Day, and for the first time since 2014 its high temperature (64°) was cooler than the high on Mother's Day (77°). And today's high was the coolest on Father's Day on record (previous coolest was 65° in 1970). The majority of Father's Days have low temperatures warmer than this year's high.
Lastly, today had overcast skies, with some light rain during the evening. The 0.03" that fell was the first measurable rain on this date in 10 years.
19 - It was a sweltering day as the high reached 88° and the dew point peaked at 75° (producing a heat index of 96°). The high might have reached 90° if not for a thunder shower that moved through in the early afternoon. And more thunder showers popped up for the rest of the day, amounting to 0.65".
This was the sixth day in a row with measurable rain. In total, 1.11" fell during these days, with more than half of it accounted for by today's rainfall.
23 - It was a hot and steamy day, and the day's scorching high of 96° was the year's first reading in the 90s in Central Park (four weeks later than usual). This reading tied the record for the date. (Meanwhile, Newark Liberty airport had a high of 101° while JFK's high failed to reach 90.) And today's low of 80° was not only the first low in the 80s in five years, it was the earliest on record. (Only two other June dates have had a low in the 80s.)
The day’s dew points were in the very uncomfortable 72°-75° range, producing a mid-afternoon heat index of 106°. (There were four consecutive hours with heat indices in the triple digits.)
Finally, the last time the first reading in the 90s was this hot was in 1996 (that year would have just three days in the 90s).
24 - The day following a record-tying high of 96°, today's high of 99° set a record for the date, and was the hottest reading in Central Park since the summer of 2012 (and the hottest reading in June since 1966). However, because the dew point fell into the 60s by afternoon, the peak heat index was six degrees lower than yesterday (when the dew point was between 72° and 75°).
Meanwhile, Newark's high reached triple digits for the second consecutive day (103°), and JFK Airport's high of 102° came a day after the high was 89°. This change was due to a shift in the wind to the west rather than coming off the ocean.
25 - Today was the third day in a row with a high temperature in the 90s. With readings of 96°-99°-96° (today), the average high of this heat wave was 97°, making this the hottest 3-day heat wave since August 1980. Meanwhile, Newark and JFK had a high in the triple digits for the third and second consecutive day, respectively.
Additionally, this was the third consecutive day with a low in the 80s in Central Park, something that's happened just two other times since 1900 (July 18-20, 2013; July 5-7, 1908). And this year's three lows of 80+ (so far) are the most since 2013.
26 - A back-door cold front moved through just as the day was dawning, providing relief from the torrid 3-day heat wave. Between 10 AM and 5 PM temperatures hovered between 69° and 70°; skies were overcast and there was a stiff breeze out of the east-northeast.
JULY
14 - After a day that was warm (high of 85°) and uncomfortably humid (dew points in the low 70s), a record amount of rain flooded the City during the evening hours. 2.61” was measured (an additional 0.02" fell in the pre-dawn hours), eclipsing the previous record for the date, in 1908, by more than an inch. (The storm was able to produce such copious amounts of rain in such a short period of time because there was little wind to move the storms along.)
Much of the rain fell between 7-8 PM, when a little more than two inches poured into the rain gauge at Central Park. This was New York's greatest daily rainfall since March 23, 2024, when 3.23” was measured. And it was July's biggest daily rainfall in 25 years, when 3.24” fell on 7/26.
The one-hour rainfall of 2.07" was one of the greatest amounts on record for this duration, and was the most since a little more than three inches fell between 9-10 PM on 9/1 in 2021 from remnants of hurricane Ida (13 area residents drowned from flash flooding that resulted).
Finally, the amount of rain that fell today was more than what fell in the months of January (0.61"), February (2.60"), and June (2.46") of this year.
AUGUST
1 - Central Park’s 34-day streak with highs of 80° or warmer ended today as the high/low was just 73°/63° (ten degree below average). This was the coolest first day of August since 1978 (when the high/low was 72°/62°). Besides 1978, there have been only three other 8/1’s that were cooler: 1923 (68°/60°); 1895 (73°/59°); and 1875 (71°/64°).
9 - It’s rare that the month of August experiences very low humidity (i.e., a reading of 25% or lower), but today was one of those instances, as the reading of 21% at 2 PM was the lowest reported in August this century. And it was a perfect summer day, as the high/low was 85°/64° under mostly clear skies.
15 - The day's high reached 89° for the third day in a row. It was also the sixth day in a row with highs of 89° or hotter (two of the highs were in the 90s), the longest such streak since one of eight days in August 2022 (8/2-9).
21 - Although hurricane Erin stayed well off the East Coast (and southeast of Long Island) it created powerful waves and riptides that crashed the shorelines from the Carolinas to Cape Cod. NYC contended with winds from out of the northeast (with gusts of 25-32 mph), which brought cool temperatures (upper 50s to low 70s), and light rain yesterday through early AM today that amounted to 0.78”.
22 - This was the third day in a row with a low in the upper 50s, the first time a streak of this length occurred in August since 2007 (coincidentally, on the same three days). What made this even more noteworthy is that it happened two years after a streak of ten summers in which there were no lows in the 50s in August.
SEPTEMBER
4 - On the calendar date least likely to see measurable precipitation (not including Feb. 29), 0.40” of rain poured down late tonight. Today was also the tenth day in a row with a high cooler than 80° and the tenth day in a row with below average temperatures – the longest such streak since last September when there was another ten-day streak (Sept. 2-11).
6 – After the warmest reading of the month was reached (86°) a strong thunderstorm during mid-afternoon brought 1.01” of rain. (These storms were responsible for my flight to LaGuardia being cancelled.)
25 – Today had the year’s last low in the 70s (the high stayed in the 70s as well). This was the latest date for this occurrence since 2018. In total there were 46 lows of 70+ this year, which was the same number as last year (30-year average is 40).
30 – The last eight days of the month were eight degrees warmer than average, with an average high/low of 80°/67°. (By contrast, the first 11 days of September were three below average.)
OCTOBER
5 – Today’s high of 84° was the warmest reading in October in six years (since a high of 93° on Oct. 2, 2019).
7 – The high was in the 80s for the fourth day in a row, the longest such streak in more than six weeks and the longest streak in October since one of five days in 2007.
30 – 1.83” of rain fell, a record amount for the date (breaking the 1917 record). Two-thirds of it poured down between 1:30 and 3:30 this afternoon. This was the second biggest daily rainfall of the year (greatest daily rainfall, 2.63”, fell on 7/14).
31 – In the wake of yesterday’s rainfall, today was very blustery, with a peak gust of 44 mph in Central Park and 45-55 mph gusts outside of Manhattan. However, these winds subsided by the time of Greenwich Village’s Halloween parade. Today’s winds brought to mind the windy conditions during Halloween 1991 caused by an offshore nor’easter made famous by the book The Perfect Storm.
NOVEMBER
2 – Skies were clear and temperatures seasonably mild for the running of the NYC Marathon.
4 – This was the third day in a row with a high of 59° and the eighth day since 10/24 with a high of 58° or 59°.
8 – 0.18” of rain fell before dawn, which was the same amount that fell on this date 100 years ago.
11 – Overcast, windy, and cold with a high/low of only 41°/33°; this was 12 degrees colder than average. Today’s mean temperature was the coldest since 3/3 when the high/low was 39°/23°
29- Today had the season’s first low reading of 32° (one week later than average). This was one day earlier than last year’s first low of freezing or colder.
DECEMBER
2 – A cold, soaking rain fell. The high/low was 40°/34° and 0.78” was measured in Central Park.
4 – Today had winter’s first high of 32° or colder, more than two weeks earlier than average (usually happens around the winter solstice). And the low of 20° was the coldest reading so early in the season since 2018, when there were lows of 17° and 15° on 11/22 and 11/23. The day was 16 degrees colder than average (only two days in January were more below average than today).
8 – Today was the 43rd day this year with a humidity reading of 25% or lower, tying last year for the most low-humidity days this century.
14 – A snowfall of 2.9” was the first measurable snowfall of the season. (Most areas surrounding NYC reported four to six-inch accumulations.) This was the first snowfall on this date since 2017 and the most on this date since 2013.
16 – This was the 20th day in a row that had a colder than average mean temperature. (The streak began on Thanksgiving Day.) Temperatures during this extended streak were seven degrees below average. Today was the seventh day since 12/5 that was ten degrees or more below average.
19 – It was wild weather day as an Arctic front approached, 1.15” of rain fell during the morning, and winds gusted to 46 mph at CPK during the afternoon. Meanwhile, surrounding areas had winds that gusted between 55 and 70 mph. The high of 58° was reached in the morning, the mildest reading this month; by midnight the temperature had dropped to 32°.
26-27 – 4.3” of snow fell; 1.6” fell on the 26th, 2.7” fell the following morning. Both days had highs that were below freezing. This was the greatest snowfall since January 2022.
29 – A wind gust of 50 mph was Central Park’s highest gust of the year (and highest since a gust of 56 mph in April 2024).
31 – For the second day in a row the high/low was 33°/27°. This was the first time on record that the last two days of a year had the same high/low.
Nice to have this back....and we can do comments too!

ReplyDeleteApril 30 - The morning hours were exceptionally warm; the mercury got no lower than 66°. Then, the day was mild/warm with a high of 73° (warmest on this date since 2010), and by midnight, the mercury fell to 59°, preventing the first low of 65°+ from occurring. (It would occur on Jun. 5).
ReplyDeleteMay 20 - As the day was dawning, the mercury bottomed out at 49°, the first low in the 40s the whole month. This was the latest date since 1993 for this occurrence, and it would be the first of a 5-day streak of such lows. Additionally, despite partly-mostly sunny skies, the mercury only rose to 67°.
May 24 - The day's high and low of 64°/48° were exactly 20 degrees chillier than this date last year. The low in the 40s was the final of the season; there wouldn't be another until Oct. 9.
May 25 - The day's high was just 66°, which was the low temperature on this date last year. Today would also be the final day of a 7-day streak of highs below 70°.
June 5 - Under sunny skies, the mercury rose to 87°, the first high in the upper 80s (87°-89°) or hotter of the year. Additionally, the day's low of 70° was the year's first low of 65°+, the latest date since 2005 for this occurrence (when it was also on 6/5).
September 1 - Today was Labor Day, and with the day's mild high of 78°, 2025 became the first year since 2002 where both Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends stayed below 80° for their entireties. Additionally, the latter was the first since 2006 to be like that.
September 7 - Today had the month's coolest high temperature, 69°, the warmest in 10 years, and the only day this month where the mercury failed to reach 70°.
November 5 - Today had the month's mildest reading, 66°, the coolest for November since 2012.

DeleteNovember 9 - Today, 63° was the year's last high in the 60s, the earliest date since 1997 for this occurrence, and the sixth earliest date on record alongside 1899 and 1920.
DeleteAlso on Spetember 30, the mercury rose into the 80s on that date for the first time since 1986, and it would be just the twelfth time a reading in the 80s occurred on the date.
